Why Adeboye stepped down as head of Nigeria’s Redeemed Church

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enoch Adeboye, stepped down as head of the church in Nigeria in line with a proposed Corporate Governance Code in Nigeria, TKOMZY'S Blog has learnt.

Mr. Adeboye referred to the governance code as he announced his decision to give up the position on Saturday, church leaders who attended the session, said.
The code, proposed in May 2015, limits the number of years heads of corporate organisations can stay in office. It is mandatory for the private sector.
The Code of Governance for Not-for-Profit entities is “Comply or Justify non-compliance.”
It is under the Not-for-Profit category that churches like the RCCG come under.
The code was later suspended, reportedly after the Attorney General, Abubakar Malami, opposed its implementation.
It was unclear whether Mr. Adeboye knew the proposal had been suspended.
While announcing the governance code in October 2016, the Financial Reporting Council, FRC, had said it would take effect from October 17, 2016.
FRC said, “In accordance with Section 50 of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria Act, 2011, which among other things requires the Directorate of Corporate Governance to develop the principles and practices of Corporate Governance applicable in Nigeria, the Council hereby releases the National Code of Corporate Governance effective 17th October 2016.”
It further said, the “Code of Governance for the Public Sector will not be applicable immediately until an executive directive is secured from the Federal Government of Nigeria. This is due to the fact that the enabling laws that set up most government establishments already carry some form of governance structure that will require an umbrella legislation to unify the different provisions of those laws to synchronise with this Code.”
Mr. Malami later wrote a strong opinion against it.
Mr. Adeboye had on Saturday surprised the top echelon of the RCCG by stepping down from direct leadership of the church in the country. He appointed Joshua Obayemi as the National Overseer of the church in Nigeria.
Mr. Obayemi, who was Special Assistant to General Overseer on Finance, was appointed at the annual Ministers Thanksgiving at Shimawa, Ogun State.
Mr. Adeboye will however remain the General Overseer of the RCCG Worldwide.

RCCG Clarifies Pastor Adeboye's Retirement

Enoch Adejare Adeboye, a pastor and general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), only relinquished his position as head of the Nigeria church but will remain RCCG’s worldwide overseer, the church has clarified.

According to a statement signed by Leke Adeboye, the clergyman’s last son and personal assistant, the announcement of a new Nigeria overseer was made in compliance with the new legal requirements set up by the Financial Regulations Council for all registered churches, mosques, and CSOs, which stipulate that heads of non-profit organisations like churches now have a maximum period of 20 years to lead their organisations while in retirement.

Such heads are also not permitted to hand over to their families.

Leke Adeboye reiterated that Funsho Odesola, a pastor, will now serve as the new church secretary, Joseph Adeyokunu, another pastor, is the new church treasurer.‎

He advised all members of RCCG to “understand this new structure and go about their service to God and humanity in holiness and soul winning”.

“We appeal to members to educate people around them and not spread inaccurate information, as Pastor E.A Adeboye remains the General Overseer of RCCG Worldwide.”

Donald Trump: Only 'stupid people' want bad US ties with Russia

US President-elect Donald Trump has said having a good relationship with Russia is a "good thing, not a bad thing".
And only "stupid people or fools" would think it was negative, he claimed on Twitter, as he appeared to hit out at critics of Moscow.
Mr Trump said there are enough problems around the world "without another one" and when he becomes president, Russia will "respect" the US "far more than now".
The tycoon, whose inauguration ceremony is due on 20 January, also said he hoped the two countries could work together to solve many "great and pressing problems" around the globe.
Ties between Washington and Moscow have become strained in the wake of allegations that Russia used hacking to interfere in last year's White House election.
President Barack Obama imposed new sanctions on Moscow and dozens of Russian diplomats were expelled from America in retaliation for the alleged cyber attacks. Russia denies the hacking accusations.
US intelligence chiefs claim in a report that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a campaign to influence the election by trying to undermine and discredit Hillary Clinton to boost Mr Trump's chances of winning.
The Republican candidate unexpectedly defeated his Democratic opponent in November's contest but he has been sceptical of the hacking accusations and called the controversy a "political witch-hunt".
Mr Trump later said he had "learned a lot" from a briefing with intelligence officials but declined to say whether he accepted their assertions about alleged Russian intrusion.
US spy agencies believe Moscow hacked into the emails of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Mrs Clinton's campaign team and fed the material to WikiLeaks.
But the report claimed there were also targets associated with the Republican party.
Earlier in the day, Mr Trump said the only reason the hacking of Democrat emails was being discussed was because the party lost "so big" in the election and was "totally embarrassed".
The billionaire businessman said any hacking during the campaign had no effect on the result and voting machines were not tampered with.
Mr Trump has said he will appoint a team to "aggressively combat and stop cyber attacks" by coming up with a plan within 90 days of him taking office.
Mr Putin most likely wanted to discredit Mrs Clinton because he blames her for inciting protests against his regime in late 2011 and early 2012, and because he resents her for disparaging comments she has made about him, the report said.
The report said Russian intelligence accessed "elements" of multiple state and local electoral boards, but "the systems targeted or compromised were not involved in counting votes".

Woman took grandson back to clinic to be swapped because she thought he was too ugly

A grandma allegedly took her newborn grandson back to the clinic where he was born because she thought he was too ugly.

The woman, who was not named in reports, apparently marched back to the clinic in Santa Marta, Colombia, with the boy and his mother, and accused staff of swapping him for another child.
She demanded the baby be swapped back but was reportedly told that there had been no swap, and that only one baby boy had been born in the clinic on the day in question.
Carlos Pallares, health secretary on Santa Marta’ city council, said: ‘The grandmother was not very happy.
‘She did not identify the baby as a new member of the family and therefore she decided to come back to the clinic along with the mother of the baby to return him.
‘The situation should be accepted. Sometimes biology, genetics play a role in these mistakes and we should accept them.’
He added that the women went back home with the baby after clinic staff conducted a health check on him.

A spokesman for the city council, Chadan Rosado, said the grandmother was being treated by a psychologist and that people should not be too quick to judge her for her actions.
It is reported that the baby is in good health and is with his family.
It is unclear why exactly the grandma thought the baby was ugly.

First victims of Florida airport shooting identified

Terry Andres, from Virginia, and Olga Woltering, from Georgia, were among the five shot dead by the gunman, suspected to be 26-year-old Esteban Santiago, in the baggage claim terminal on Friday.
Mr Andres was on holiday with his wife when he was killed. His wife managed to escape the terrifying ordeal unharmed.
His daughter confirmed the 62-year-old’s death and said he was due to celebrate his 63rd birthday soon
Mr Andres had worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and had volunteered with the local fire department in Virginia Beach, WAVY-TV reported.
Olga Woltering, who lives in Atlanta, Georgia, was due to go on a cruise in Florida on Saturday with her husband Ralph for his 90th birthday.
Friends, family and members of the Transfiguration Catholic Church where the couple attended paid tribute to Mrs Woltering on Facebook, describing her as a ‘wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend’.

Three others were shot dead and eight injured when the gunman opened fire as passengers collected their baggage.
The identities of the other victims have no yet been released.
Santiago was taken into custody immediately after the incident.

Police are investigating whether he was mentally disturbed or had links to any extremist groups including ISIS.

Authorities say Santiago walked into an FBI office in Anchorage in November last year claiming the government was trying to control his mind and he was being forced to watch videos for ISIS.
According to his family, the army veteran, who served in Iraq with the National Guard, was struggling with psychiatric problems in the lead up to the shooting and had recently been hospitalized for treatment.

Fresh Gunfire in Ivory Coast as Officials Seek End to Mutiny

A witness in Bouake, Ivory Coast's second-largest city, says gunfire has been heard for a second day in as security officials prepare to meet with disgruntled soldiers who staged a mutiny over pay and other conditions.
Moussa Fofana, a taxi driver in Bouake, said Saturday the latest shooting began at 3 a.m. and continued sporadically for several hours before dying down.
Soldiers launched their mutiny early Friday by opening fire at a military camp and in the streets of Bouake. Similar unrest was reported in other cities including Daloa in the west and Korhogo in the north.
Appearing on state television Friday night, Defense Minister Alain-Richard Donwahi said security officials would meet Saturday with soldiers to try to end what he called a "deplorable" situation.

'ZERO TOLERANCE' Merkel's deputy calls for ban on Islamist mosques amid ISIS threat

GERMANY'S Vice Chancellor has called for a ban on Islamist mosques in the country.

Sigmar Gabriel, an outspoken critic of Angela Merkel, says the move will help prevent further ISIS terror attacks.
He believes a "zero-tolerance" stance against radical Islam is needed to stop communities becoming "degenerate".
Mr Gabriel wants the proposed crackdown to focus on Salafism – an ultra-conservative branch of Islam based on Sharia law.
He said: "Salafist mosques must be banned, communities dissolved, and the preachers should be expelled as soon as possible.
Those who encourage for violence do not enjoy the protection of religious freedom.
"If we are serious about the fight against Islamism and terrorism, then it must also be a cultural fight."

His comments come weeks after ISIS extremist Anis Amri killed 12 people and injured 50 others in the Berlin terror attack.
The Tunisian, who was known to authorities, ploughed a lorry into a packed Christmas market in the German capital.
He was discussed seven times among security chiefs before the attack – but they decided he did not present a clear and present danger.
In her New Year address issued last week, Mrs Merkel admitted Islamist terrorism is the biggest threat facing Germany.
But she insisted the country would remain "free, considerate and open".
She said: "Our values are the opposite of the hate-filled world of terrorism and will prove stronger than it. Together we are stronger."

Governor Fayose Gets Federal Government’s N8.8b In Paris Loan Refund

Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State frequently bashes the Federal Government, but SaharaReporters has learned that the state’s current financial solvency is largely indebted to the Muhammadu Buhari Presidency. The Presidency recently approved a refund of N8.8b to Ekiti State as the state’s share of a loan refund from the Paris Club.
Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State frequently bashes the Federal Government, but SaharaReporters has learned that the state’s current financial solvency is largely indebted to the Muhammadu Buhari Presidency. The Presidency recently approved a refund of N8.8b to Ekiti State as the state’s share of a loan refund from the Paris Club.

Mr. Fayose has often accused the Federal Government of nonchalance about states’ financial crises. But contrary to those claims, it appears the Federal Government has indeed been supporting the Ekiti State government in meeting its financial obligations, including paying its workers.

Our correspondent learned from the Federal Ministry of Finance that the state government has received financial support in different forms since the inception of Mr. Buhari’s administration in 2015.

In particular, our findings indicated that the improved financial position of Governor Fayose’s administration was made possible by the N8.8 billion the state received recently from the Federal Government as the state’s share of a loan refund from the Paris Club.

The refund also boosted the budget support facility the Federal Government has been providing to some states of the federation, which the Fayose administration in Ekiti State has consistently received.

Our correspondent also discovered that the state government spends an estimated N2.6 billion each month on salaries, subvention, pension and gratuity. That level of financial obligation exceeds the state’s internally generated revenues (IGR).
According to a report published recently by National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Ekiti ranks as one of the states with the lowest internally generated revenue in Nigeria. The report put the state’s IGR at a miserly N3.3 billion each year.

The state’s share of funds from the federation account is on average about N1.6 billion monthly. Based on available data, the state would not have been able to meet its monthly financial obligations without significant assistance from the Federal Government.

Data from the Ministry of Finance indicate that the state’s share of the refund from the Paris Club was merely a fraction of the financial support the state has been getting from the Federal Government.

Under the fiscal sustainability plan, Ekiti State received N1.3 billion in the first three months in 2016 and then N1.1 billion in subsequent months since the program began.

A recent editorial comment published by SaharaReporters confirmed the Ekiti State government’s substantial dependence on the Federal Government to meet most of its financial obligations, contrary to claims by the governor. The commentator wrote, “Ekiti State was once a proud producer of Igbemo Rice. Incidentally, Igbemo Ekiti is the next town to Fayose's village, Afao Ekiti.

“So, [Mr. Fayose] should tell Nigerians why his government of stomach infrastructure has failed to revitalize the Igbemo rice factory which was once a pride of the Ekiti people.” The commentator questioned why Governor Fayose had failed to utilize the state’s comparative advantage in agriculture. He also raised questions about the governor’s failure to partner with other states to boost agricultural production in the state.

“Has the governor of Ebonyi State not increased rice production to the extent that the state is selling rice to other states right now?” wrote the commentator, adding, “Is the lousy governor of Ekiti state not aware that the government of Governor Akin Ambode of Lagos State decided to partner with Governor Bagudu of Kebbi State for the production of rice? Is Mr. Fayose not aware that the partnership has created opportunities for Lagosians to buy a bag of rice in Lagos at N12, 000 while it is sold at N20, 000 in Fayose’s land of empty stomach infrastructure?’’

Ekiti State workers had on different occasions in 2016 appealed to the governor to use funds released by the Federal Government to clear their salary arrears.

Ghana Elected President, Nana Akufo-Addo to be sworn in as president

Nana Akufo-Addo is to be sworn in as Ghana's new president after beating incumbent leader John Mahama in last month's election.
Some 11 African heads of state and more than 6,000 people are expected in the ceremony in the capital, Accra, where security will be tight.
Mr Akufo-Addo, a 72-year-old former human rights lawyer, promised free high school education and more factories.
But critics have questioned the viability of his ambitions.
Mr Akufo-Addo, from the New Patriotic Party, was elected on his third attempt to reach the post, after a campaign dominated by the country's faltering economy
  • 72 years old
  • Human rights lawyer
  • Campaigned for a return to multi-party democracy under military rule
  • A former justice and foreign minister in the NPP government from 2001 to 2007, he is running for president for a third time
  • His main promise was to build a factory in each of Ghana's more than 200 districts

Mr Akufo-Addo has vowed to revive the country's economy, saying that "there are brighter days ahead".
An economic slump under Mr Mahama led to an International Monetary Fund bail-out.
The current president has defended his record, saying his government had been up against "strong headwinds" that caused growth to slow, public sector debt to rise and the country's currency, the cedi, to fall.
Ghana has been a multi-party democracy since the end of military rule in 1992 and the transition is seen as reinforcing its reputation for the peaceful transfer of power between administrations.

Drake Is ''Completely Falling'' for Jennifer Lopez: ''He's Always Had a Crush on Her Growing Up''

Jennifer Lopez may just be "having fun" in her new kinda-relationship with Drake, but it looks like the rapper is completely smitten with his lady, who also happened to be his childhood crush.
A source tells E! News exclusively that Drake is "completely falling for J.Lo. He has always had a crush on her growing up, so the fact that this is all coming to life is pretty cool for him. He really likes her though."
The insider adds, "They laugh and get along perfectly. The age gap is not an issue for him, because he digs an older woman. J.Lo has always been into younger men, so it's a good combo."
As for the seriousness of their relationship, the source shares that the pair are "taking things as slow as they could, but a relationship may be in the works between them," and explains, "He treats her like a queen and loves her work ethic and family values. This is the first girl besides Rihanna in a while that he is really into. Drake is looking for a relationship and something solid."
Drizzy and Jenny from the block continue to make waves as one of Hollywood's hottest new couples.
The pair, who have been spotted out and about together on numerous occasions, were most recently seen on New Year's Eve, when J.Lo attended Drake's show at the Hakkasan Las Vegas nightclub. Lopez had recently canceled her own New Year's Eve show at Miami's E11even nightclub.
Drake did not give his girl a public shout-out during his 40-minute set, but did perform some of his tracks off of Views, such as "Energy," "Hotline Bling" and "Fake Love." He also performed his and RiRi's duet "Work" before cutting the song short and saying, "Alright, that was the vibe for 2016...you've got to give it up to my new music."
Lopez and Drake have not commented on the status of their relationship. Another source had told E! News exclusively recently that J.Lo is enjoying her time with Drizzy, but isn't considering him as a potential serious boyfriend, adding, "she's having fun."

Kim Kardashian: ‘I’m now getting psoriasis on my face’

KIM Kardashian says her psoriasis has spread since her Paris robbery in October and that she now has dry, itchy patches on her face.
The reality TV star was first diagnosed with the auto-immune disease in 2010 and has recently stopped trying to cover it up.
The skin condition can flare up in times of excessive stress and it is safe to say that Kardashian has had a stressful final few months of 2016.
In October, she was robbed at gunpoint in Paris with thieves taking $10 million in jewellery.
After the incident the selfie queen started to retreat from public life.
Her issues were further compounded when husband Kanye West was hospitalised for nine days after suffering a “psychiatric emergency.”
Kardashian was very open last year on her app when she discussed the condition.
“Everyone with psoriasis has different symptoms; sometimes the rashes are itchy, sometimes they’re flaky. Mine flares up from time to time for different reasons,” she said. “I’m always hoping for a cure, of course, but in the meantime, I’m learning to just accept it as part of who I am.

“Sometimes I just feel like it’s my big flaw and everyone knows about it, so why cover it?” she said.
Kardashian’s mum, Kris Jenner, has the hereditary condition as well and was the first one to notice it on her daughter.
