Revealed: Diesel fumes are proven for the first time to cause coughing and shortness of breath

Diesel fumes have been proven for the first time to cause coughing and shortness of breath.
British scientists now have physical evidence that car fumes cause nerves in the lungs to misfire.
It was known that people with asthma, taken to traffic-heavy Oxford Street in London, for example, are worse affected than those in less polluted areas.
But researchers can now explain the effect of diesel particles, which are so tiny that the body mistakes them for natural molecules and draws them deep into the lungs.
A team from Imperial College London has discovered diesel fumes trigger a receptor in the airway, starting a chain reaction which causes nerves in the lungs to fire wrongly.

Do YOU live in a city? You're more likely to hear voices inside your head due to the stress of urban-living

Living in a city significantly increases the risk of psychotic experiences, such as hearing voices and paranoia, research has shown.
Young people growing up in urban areas were 40 per cent more likely to have had such episodes than their countryside counterparts.
For those living in areas with more crime, a whopping 62 per cent reported psychotic experiences.
Dr Helen Fisher, one of the researchers from King's College, said: 'These findings highlight the importance of early, preventative strategies for reducing psychosis risk and suggests that adolescents living in threatening neighbourhoods within cities should be made a priority.
'If we intervene early enough, for example by offering psychological therapies and support to help them cope better with stressful experiences, we could reduce young people's risk for developing psychosis and other mental health problems further down the line.'
A team from King’s College London and Duke University analysed 2,000 18-year-olds in major cities in England and Wales.
They ranked participants a levels of ‘urbanicity’ and measured neighbourhood social factors through surveys of over 5,000 immediate neighbours of the participants. Personal experience by violent crime was assessed through interviews with participants.
The researchers discovered that among adolescents living in the largest and most densely populated cities, more than a third (34 per cent) reported psychotic symptoms between the age of 12 and 18.
Participants were classed as having suffered from psychosis if they had reported at least one of 13 experiences, which included hearing voices, believing spies were watching them or their food was being poisoned.
Just over 21 per cent of adolescents living in more favourable neighbourhoods reported psychotic symptoms.
This meant the rate of psychotic experiences was almost three times greater for young residents in higher crime areas.

I am so so sorry': 'Broken' Ariana Grande sends emotional tweet after 19 are killed in terrorist attack at her UK concert

Ariana Grande said she's 'broken' in a tweet after 19 people died and 59 were injured amid a suspected terrorist attack at her Monday evening concert at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England, adding, 'from the bottom of my heart, [I] am so so sorry. [I] don't have words.'
Her manager Scooter Braun said, 'Our hearts are broken' as they mourned 'the lives of children and loved ones taken by this cowardly act,' thanking authorities in Manchester for their rapid response to the disastrous occurrence. He added: 'We ask all of you to hold the victims, their families, and all those affected in your hearts and prayers.'
The 23-year-old singer has suspended her The Dangerous Woman Tour, TMZ reported, adding that the singer was 'in no condition to perform,' and organizers take another look at security conditions for the remaining dates.
Concertgoers who witnessed the carnage told the Press Association in Britain that at about 10:35 p.m., a pair of loud explosions were heard in the building. Majid Khan, 22, said that 'a huge bomb-like bang went off that hugely panicked everyone, and we were all trying to flee the arena.'
Father-of-two Shaun Hunter, who brought his daughters, ages 12 and 10 to the show, told The Times of London there was a 'a stampede' of attendees toward the exits after the explosion. He noted, 'I saw one bloke carrying his daughter - she was bleeding.'
Robert Tempkin, 22, described the situation that unfolded amid the disaster: 'Everyone was screaming and running ... there were coats and people's phones on the floor. People just dropped everything.'

You don’t win games on empty stomach, 3SC players tell management

Players and officials of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) sauntered out of the Adamasingba Stadium with heads bowed after their humiliating 3-0 home defeat by FC IfeanyiUbah on Sunday. The boys looked subdued, but not because they lost the game. Rather, as one of the players said, they were thinking of the hardship they have been facing for the past three months that they have not been paid any salary.
“We are suffering,” the player, a defender volunteered. Sunday’s defeat means 3SC remain among the relegation candidates with 22 points from 20 matches. They are 19th out of 20 teams in the competition and unless something drastic happens, the darling club of Oyo State will play in the lower division next season.
Lamenting the sorry state of the first Nigerian club to win a continental title, the defender, who pleaded anonymity, said: “We cannot be expected to rub shoulders with FC IfeanyiUbah players when we have so many domestic issues dogging us. We have not been paid for three months and sincerely, you cannot win matches on empty stomach.”

Mourinho bets the house on Europa League glory

Though he denies it, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has gambled the club's season on the outcome of Wednesday's Europa League final against Ajax in Stockholm.
Having missed out on Champions League qualification via the Premier League, United must beat Ajax at the Friends Arena to secure a return to Europe's elite competition.
Mourinho has made his priorities clear in recent weeks by resting players for league fixtures, but he claims United's injury problems left him with no choice.
"It was not a gamble. It was a simple decision," said Mourinho, who picked a team with an average age of 22 years and 284 days for Sunday's season-ending 2-0 home win over Crystal Palace.
"When we lost players in a period of 17 matches in seven weeks, it was the impossible job. It was not a gamble, just a consequence of our situation."
Mourinho won the UEFA Cup, as the Europa League was previously known, with Porto in 2003, but the two-time Champions League winner has been publicly dismissive of the competition in recent years.
Upon returning to Chelsea in 2013, Mourinho said of the tournament, which the London club had won the previous season: "I don't want to win the Europa League. It would be a big disappointment for me."
United's performances during this season's tournament suggested their players were not sure how much they wanted to win it either.
They lost their first two away games, against Feyenoord and Fenerbahce, needed extra time to beat Anderlecht in the quarter-finals and were given a scare by Celta Vigo in the semi-finals.
Now that the trophy is within touching distance, Mourinho has started to paint the tournament in a different light.
He has already masterminded a League Cup success and has suggested Europa League glory would mean United have had a more successful season than trophy-less top-four rivals like Manchester City and Liverpool.
In the words of defender Phil Jones: "People will say we've not had a good season, but would you rather finish second and win nothing or win two cups and be in the Champions League?"

Ousted South Korean leader Park goes on trial

South Korea's ousted president Park Geun-Hye, grim-faced and brought to court in handcuffs, went on trial Tuesday over a sprawling corruption scandal that saw millions take to the streets and led to her downfall.
Only two months after leaving the presidential palace in disgrace, Park was brought to the Seoul Central District Court in handcuffs on a justice ministry bus, with at least six guards on board.
She wore a blue trouser suit, a badge with her prisoner number, and no make-up in court, where she avoided meeting the glance of her longtime secret confidante and co-accused Choi Soon-Sil.
The trial, expected to last for months, is the final act in the drama that engulfed Park, the daughter of a dictator who went on to be elected president herself before she was sacked by the country's top court.
Presiding judge Kim Se-Yun, who heads a three-man panel -- there is no jury -- asked her: "What is your occupation, the accused Park Geun-Hye?"
She responded: "I don't have any occupation."
Park, 65, is the third former South Korean leader to stand trial for corruption.
She was impeached by parliament in December after mass demonstrations -- that built on economic and social frustrations -- to demand her removal over a scandal centred on Choi, her friend of 40 years, and implicating some of the country's top businessmen.
She was detained soon after her dismissal -- Tuesday's court session was her first public appearance since then -- and indicted on 18 charges including bribery, coercion and abuse of power for offering governmental favours to tycoons who bribed Choi.

19 killed in terror blast at UK pop concert

Nineteen people have been killed in a suspected terrorist attack during a pop concert by US star Ariana Grande in the northwest English city of Manchester, police said Tuesday.
There were scenes of panic as Grande's audience of youthful fans fled the 21,000-capacity venue after what eyewitnesses described as a "huge bomb-like bang" in the foyer area at the end of the concert.
A fleet of ambulances was seen rushing to the venue and bomb disposal teams were dispatched soon after, as city residents opened up their doors to stranded concert-goers after train services were shut down.
So far 19 people have been confirmed dead, with around 50 others injured. This is currently being treated as a terrorist incident until police know otherwise," police said in a statement.
British Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the "appalling terrorist attack".
"All our thoughts are with the victims and the families of those who have been affected," she said in a statement.
