Smoking to kill 8m people a year by 2030, new study warns

The number of people who die from smoking is going to rise considerably in the coming years, according to a new report.
Tobacco use currently kills an estimated six million people worldwide every year - but by 2030, the World Health Organisation (WHO) believes this will increase to eight million.
The study also suggests that the global economy is losing at least $1tn (£820bn) a year because of the impact smoking has on productivity levels and health services.
More than 80% of smoking deaths occur in low and middle-income countries, where the number of smokers is continuing to rise.
The WHO claims most governments are failing to use cheap and effective tools which can reduce tobacco use and save lives, such as complete bans on tobacco marketing, prominent warning labels on cigarette packets and price increases.
Global revenues generated from tobacco taxes only stood at $269bn (£221bn) in 2013/14, it said, which is nowhere near enough to recoup the economic losses caused by smoking.
Health experts say tobacco use is the single biggest preventable cause of death worldwide
The WHO's report, produced in conjunction with the US National Cancer Institute, said: "Government fears that tobacco control will have an adverse economic impact are not justified by the evidence. The science is clear; the time for action is now."
Its authors claimed that governments would be able to fund more expensive anti-smoking schemes, such as mass media campaigns and cessation treatments, if tobacco taxes were raised.
Within months, all cigarettes in the UK will be sold in standardised green packaging with large, explicit photographs which show the harmful effects of smoking.
Several tobacco-producing countries have opened a trade dispute against Australia, which first introduced the plain packaging rules and outlawed distinctive logos or colourful branding.
The World Trade Organisation is expected to rule on the complaint later this year.

Donald Trump gives son-in-law Jared Kushner government job

Donald Trump's son-in-law has been named as senior adviser to the President in the new US administration.
Jared Kushner, who is married to Mr Trump's daughter Ivanka, has no political experience but has been a senior figure on the billionaire's team during the campaign.
Like his father-in-law, Mr Kushner is a New York-based real estate magnate with a wide range of business dealings that could be challenged as posing potential conflicts of interest.
The 35-year-old is also a publisher of the New York Observer weekly newspaper.
Mr Trump said his son-in-law would serve as senior White House adviser.
"Jared has been a tremendous asset and trusted adviser throughout the campaign and transition and I am proud to have him in a key leadership role in my administration," he said in a statement.
His appointment could also be challenged by an anti-nepotism law that bans presidents from hiring family members.
However, a lawyer for Mr Kushner, Jamie Gorelick, argued that the 1967 law did not apply and pointed to a later congressional measure which allows the President "unfettered" and "sweeping" authority in hiring staff.
She said he would step down as CEO of the family's real estate company and from the New York Observer.
Mr Trump's son-in-law has continued to be influential on the transition team, reportedly playing a role in coordinating contacts with foreign leaders and shaping Middle East policy.
Mr Kushner's powerful role in the new administration emerged as Mr Trump confidently predicted that all his high-profile appointments would be approved by the US Senate.
Senators are to question the President-elect's picks for the Secretary of State, attorney general and head of homeland security, as at least nine of his appointments appear before committees from Tuesday.
The President-elect held talks with several business and media figures at Trump Towers on Monday, but the day was overshadowed by his angry reaction to an attack by actress Meryl Streep.
He also met Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to discuss the confirmation hearings and repealing and replacing President Barack Obama's healthcare law.
The leader of the Senate Republicans said he expected six or seven of Trump's picks - "particularly the national security team" - to be "in place on day one".

Church and Ferguson refuse 'tyrant' Trump's inauguration invitation

Singer Charlotte Church and former X Factor star Rebecca Ferguson have both turned down invitations from Donald Trump to perform at his inauguration.
Church claimed she had been approached by members of the President-elect's team on Twitter.
In a post directed to the billionaire, the singer wrote: "Your staff have asked me to sing at your inauguration, a simple internet search would show I think you're a tyrant."
Earlier this month, former X Factor runner-up Ferguson announced she had been approached by the President-elect, and said she would "graciously accept" the invitation as long as she could use the platform as "a reminder of how love is the only thing that will conquer all the hatred in this world".
She said she would perform at the ceremony in Washington DC on 20 January if she could sing protest song Strange Fruit.
But on Tuesday, she issued a statement saying she "wasn't comfortable with the song choice made on my behalf".
She added: "As a mother and an artist, I had to defend my stance. That is why I made the decision to sing Strange Fruit when I was invited.
Strange Fruit is a controversial 1930s Billie Holliday protest song associated with the civil rights movement.
"I felt it was the only song that would not compromise my artistic integrity," Ferguson said.
It is unclear from the statement if the singer was in fact denied the right to choose the song.
"There are many grey areas about the offer for me to perform that I'm unable to share right now," she said. "But I will not be singing."
DJ Moby also revealed he had been asked to perform.
Posting on his Instagram page, he said he was "laughing" at the invite and would DJ at the inaugural ball "if as payment Trump released his tax returns".

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Agree to Handle Divorce Privately

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will be handling their divorce privately, they said in a joint statement obtained by ABC News on Monday.
The stars said that the new agreement, which involves a private judge, was made in the best interest of their family.
"The parties and their counsel have signed agreements to preserve the privacy rights of their children and family by keeping all court documents confidential and engaging a private judge to make any necessary legal decisions and to facilitate the expeditious resolution of any remaining issues," the statement read. "The parents are committed to act as a united front to effectuate recovery and reunification."
The two actors were together for more than a decade and married for two years before Jolie filed for divorce last September. They have six children: Maddox, 15, Pax, 13, Zahara, 12, Shiloh, 10, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 8.
Last month, a judge denied a request by Pitt, 53, to seal documents in his custody battle with Jolie, 41. Pitt said in court documents that he was "extremely concerned" that if the records were not sealed, his children's privacy rights would be irreparably damaged. Jolie's attorneys, however, fired back that Pitt's request was merely a "thinly-veiled attempt to shield himself, rather than the minor children, from the public view."
News of the estranged couple's newly-formed agreement was first reported by the Associated Press.

Jonathan, Diezani shared $466m bribe

Nigeria’s former president Goodluck Jonathan and his oil minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke received kickbacks as part of a $1.3 billion deal involving oil giants ENI and Shell, Italian prosecutors have said. According to a report by the AFP, Court documents filed late last month in the city of Milan outline a case against 11 people, including senior executives from the two oil majors and the companies themselves.

Jonathan, who left office in May 2015, and Diezani Alison-Madueke, his long-time petroleum minister who was also the first woman president of OPEC, do not feature on the list yet. But they are alleged to have played a central role in the deal, which saw ENI and Shell make a $1.3 billion payment in 2011 for an offshore oil block in Nigeria. No formal charges have been brought and the parties usually have 20 days to respond to the conclusion of the preliminary investigation report before any formal prosecution. ENI chief executive Claudio Descalzi and his predecessor Paolo Scaroni met Jonathan “in person” to thrash out the deal, which also involved former British intelligence agents working as advisors for Shell, it was alleged. Prosecutors allege ENI and Shell executives worked with Nigerian businessman Dan Etete, who was oil minister under the military ruler Sani Abacha from 1995 to 1998. Etete’s company Malabu was the “fraudulent holder” of the OPL 245 block, according to the court documents. After talks in Milan and Abuja, the block was bought illegally by the oil majors in contravention of domestic laws, “without competitive tendering” and with “full, unconditional exemption from all national taxes”, prosecutors said. A total of $801.5 million was allegedly transferred to Etete’s Malabu accounts, of which $466 million was converted into cash in Nigeria and used for remunerating government officials, including Jonathan and Alison-Madueke, prosecutors said. A further $54 million was withdrawn by Abubakar Aliyu, whom prosecutors describe as an “agent” of Jonathan. The beneficiaries of the money went on a shopping spree buying “property, aeroplanes, armoured cars,” prosecutors added. – ‘No basis’ for prosecution – ENI and Royal Dutch Shell have both denied wrongdoing. Shell said in an email: “We are aware of the investigation and we hope to show the prosecutor that there is no basis to prosecute Shell. “Shell takes this matter seriously and is co-operating with the authorities.” Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has also recently pressed charges in connection with the same oil block deal. Charges were “filed towards the end of last year”, EFCC spokesman Wilson Uwujaren told AFP, without elaborating. Anti-corruption campaigners view the case as a classic example of graft in Nigeria but also an indication of the difficulty in tackling the problem when it crosses international borders. Alison-Madueke is facing a flurry of graft allegations in Nigeria and was arrested by Britain’s National Crime Agency on suspicion of bribery and money laundering in 2015. She has denied the allegations. Last week, the Federal High Court in Lagos ordered Alison-Madueke to temporary forfeit $153 million that was allegedly syphoned from state coffers. For his part, Jonathan has denied that his government was corrupt and contested his successor Muhammadu Buhari’s claim that he inherited a “virtually empty” treasury. Buhari secured a historic first win for an opposition leader in Nigeria’s history when he defeated Jonathan in presidential elections in March 2015. He campaigned on a platform to target endemic corruption and has said “mind-boggling” sums of money have been stolen from the public purse. His government has arrested a series of high-ranking officials from Jonathan’s administration on corruption charges but few have been convicted. *Reported by AFP

Handcuffed Texas suspect who shot himself has died

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A Texas man who managed to pull a handgun from his waistband and shoot himself in the head while handcuffed in the back of a police patrol car died of his wound Monday, one day after the shooting.
An Austin police statement confirmed that 19-year-old Zachary Khabir Anam, 19, died at University Medical Center-Brackenridge, according to an Austin police statement.
Anam was taken into custody at the Barton Creek Square shopping mall around midday Sunday, where private security officers had detained him on suspicion of shoplifting and carrying a controlled substance. Interim police Chief Brian Manley said Anam was handcuffed and placed in the back seat of a patrol car for the ride to police headquarters downtown. En route, Anam managed to reach his manacled hands round his right side, grabbed a handgun hidden in a rear waistband, and pointed the weapon at his own head with threats to shoot himself, Manley said.
The officer at the wheel, who was not identified, stopped the car, got out and ordered Anam to drop the gun. Back and forth the threats and demands went for six minutes until Anam shot himself, Manley said. The confrontation was recorded on the dashboard camera of a police patrol car trailing the one containing Anam, Manley said.
A police spokeswoman would say whether Anam had been searched thoroughly for weapons, and Manley said that would be a focus of the internal investigation being conducted Monday.
Even if the suspect had been searched and handcuffed previously by private security officers, Austin Police Department policy holds each officer responsible for searching each person taken into custody for weapons.
Anam had run afoul of the law previously. In April 2016, he was arrested on a drug possession charge in Buda, about 15 miles southwest of Austin. That case remained open. At the end of May 2016, Austin police issued a warrant accusing him of engaging in organized criminal activity involving a string of burglaries and auto thefts. The warrant hadn't been served yet.
The officer who had custody of Anam has been on the force for 11 years.

Woman who suffered 17 miscarriages and was told she'd never give birth becomes a mother of four - in just NINE MONTHS

  • Lytina Kaur from Nottingham had her first child in September 2015
  • The 32-year-old then welcomed two children via surrogate and gave birth to a second child in June of 2016
A woman who had 17 miscarriages after being told she would never give birth has become a mother to four children - in just nine months.
Lytina Kaur was was told she may never be able to give birth after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, an aggressive cancer of the white blood cells, at the age of 17 and receiving a bone marrow transplant a year later.
However 13 years and several miscarriages later, Lytina, 32, from Wollaton in Nottingham, found out she had fallen pregnant - and she is now a mother to four young daughters.
Lytina gave birth to her first daughter Kiran in September 2015. Her twins, Kajal and Kavita, were born via surrogate in India two months later.

And in June 2016, Lytina gave birth to Kiyara at the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham.
But before becoming a mother-of-four Lytina suffered a number of miscarriages, the first of which happened in 2010 after she conceived twins.

Lytina, who first started trying to get pregnant after her 2007 wedding, told the Nottingham Post: 'I had 17 miscarriages in total and they were all hard but that one was the most difficult because it was my first and I had been carrying them for a long time.'

She then decided to explore adoption, but after being told there were no suitable Asian children available, she and her husband started looking at surrogacy.
Between 2013 and 2015, a hospital in India made six attempts to implant an embryo into a surrogate – but each ended in miscarriage and the couple gave up.
But then, in February 2015, Lytina found out she had fallen pregnant naturally as she was planning to undergo IVF.

Although she had been fearful of suffering another miscarriage, a delighted Lytina gave birth to her first daughter, Kiran, via a planned C-section at the Queen's Medical Centre in September 2015.
In November, twin babies Kajal and Kavita were born in India after the hospital, as a goodwill gesture, had transferred the last four embryos to a surrogate mother.
A month later, Lytina flew over to India to meet the twins and complete the process for bringing them home.
But while she was over there, she discovered she had fallen pregnant naturally again.

Obama says goodbye in last presidential speech

Barack Obama closes the book on his presidency Tuesday, with a farewell speech in Chicago that will try to lift supporters felled by Donald Trump’s shock victory. Obama’s last trip on Air Force One will be a pilgrimage to his adoptive hometown, where he will address a sell-out crowd not far from where he accepted the presidency eight years ago.

Diehard fans — many African Americans — have braved Chicago’s frigid winter to collect free tickets, which now sell for upwards of $1,000 a piece on Craigslist. The First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden will come along on for the ride. Obama’s cross-country trek would be a sentimental trip down memory lane, were it not slap-bang in the middle of a tumultuous presidential handover.

Trump has smashed conventions, vowed to efface Obama’s legacy and hurled personal insults left and right. The 2016 election campaign has raised serious questions about the resilience of US democracy. In a virtually unprecedented move, US intelligence has accused the Kremlin of tipping the electoral scales in Trump’s favor. Democrats, cast into the political wilderness with the loss of the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives plus a majority of statehouses, are struggling to regroup. With an approval rating hovering around 55 percent, Obama will hope to steel them for new battles ahead. Lead speechwriter Cody Keenan said the address will be about Obama’s vision for where the country should still go. “It’s not going to be like an anti-Trump speech, it’s not going to be a red meat, rabble rousing thing, it will be statesman-like but it will also be true to him,” Keenan told AFP. “It will tell a story.” – Life after White House – Trump’s unorthodox politics has thrown 55-year-old Obama’s transition and post-presidency plans into flux. Obama, having vowed a smooth handover of power, finds himself being increasingly critical of Trump as he prepares to leave office on January 20. After that there will still be a holiday and an autobiography, but Obama could find himself being dragged backed into the political fray if Trump were to enact a Muslim registry or deport adults brought to the United States years ago by their parents. Having vowed to take a backseat in politics, Obama’s second act could yet be as politically engaged as Jimmy Carter — whose post-presidency has remade his image as an elder statesman. Many Obama aides who had planned to take exotic holidays or launch coffer-replenishing forays into the private sector are also reassessing their future and mulling a return to the political trenches. Obama’s foundation is already gearing up for a quasi-political role — funneling idealistic youngsters into public life. – Presidential precedent – Presidents since George Washington have delivered a farewell address of sorts. Washington’s final 7,641-word message — which is still read once a year in the Senate by tradition — contained warnings about factionalism and interference by foreign powers that seem oddly prescient. But speechwriter Keenan sees few obvious templates: “Bush and Clinton did theirs from here (the White House), George H.W. Bush went to West Point, gave a foreign policy speech,” he told AFP. “They are all totally different.” The trip to Chicago is not just for nostalgia, Keenan indicated. “The thread that has run though his career from his days as community organizer to the Oval Office is the idea that if you get ordinary people together and get them educated, get them empowered, get them to act on something, that’s when good things happen,” he said. “For him, as someone who started as a community organizer, whose campaign was powered by young people, ordinary people, we decided we wanted to go back to Chicago.” “Chicago is not just his hometown, it’s where his career started.” And now it is also where Obama’s presidential career will effectively end

RCCG: Group urges Adeboye to rescind resignation as G.O.

The Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER) has called on Pastor Enoch Adeboye to rescind his resignation as the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG). The call came in a statement issued by the Executive Director of the Abuja-based human rights group, Mr Frank Tietie, on Tuesday.

Tietie said CASER would seek a court order to compel Adeboye to reverse his decision should the “holy man of God’’ refuse to voluntarily do so.

Adeboye stepped down as the General Overseer of the RCCG in Nigeria on Saturday on the basis of the controversial Corporate Governance Code of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN). The code, which stipulates a 20-year maximum tenure for heads of religious groups and civil rights organisations, among other provisions, was suspended by the Federal Government on Monday. But for the suspension, the regulation could have also seen the exit of other affected men of God from the headship of their churches. They include Bishop David Oyedepo (Living Faith Church Worldwide aka Winners’ Chapel); Pastor William Kumuyi (Deeper Christian Life Ministry) and Bishop Mike Okonkwo (The Redeemed Evangelical Mission). Tietie said: “CASER urges the highly revered Pastor Adeboye to change his mind and rescind his resignation as the General Overseer of RCCG. “Where, therefore, the holy man of God refuses to review his decision to resign, CASER shall seek an order of court to compel him to remain as the general overseer.’’ He said the group was acting, not only in the interest of members of the RCCG who respect Adeboye, but also in the interest the Church generally.

Christina Milian forgoes wearing a bra in sheer dress but ends up revealing her Spanx at Live By Night premiere

She is an expert at turning heads.
Christina Milian, however, may have dropped a jaw or two by accident as she wore a dress that turned sheer under the flashbulbs of snapping cameras at the premiere of Live By Night in Los Angeles on Monday.
The 35-year-old actress opted to forgo a bra as she wore a gorgeous bronze sequined gown while appearing to sport a corset.

The long-sleeved, floor-length gown, which sparkled with gold embroidery, hugged at Christina's every curve.
The mother-of-one drew her raven tresses back in a tight, parted bun with not a flyaway in sight, drawing even more attention to her revealing dress.
