John Kerry visits site where he killed 24-year-old man during the Vietnam War
John Kerry has visited the place in the Mekong Delta where he once killed a man after being ambushed during the Vietnam war .
On Saturday, the outgoing US Secretary of State warmly greeted a former soldier who knew the man he shot dead as a 26-year-old Navy lieutenant.
Recalling the incident, Viet Cong veteran Vo Ban Tam said he could hear Kerry’s boat cruising the Bay Hap River before the February 28, 1969, attack.
Vo told how the plan was to use rifle and grenade fire to lure the heavily-armed US vessel within range of a shoulder-held rocket launcher.
The tactic had previously paid off for the Viet Cong, but Kerry made the bold decision to deliberately beach his boat then storm ashore to pursue his enemy.
Grabbing his M-16 rifle, he chased down the guerrilla with the rocket launcher and shot him dead, saving his crew from a counterattack.
Vo remembered the dead man, 24-year-old Ba Thanh, as a respected member of the Viet Cong’s main force in Ca Mau province, who had been trained to use the prized launcher
Speaking through an interpreter, he said: “He was a good soldier.”
He had earlier told Kerry: “We were guerrillas. We were never there where you were shooting,” to which the American replied: “Well, I’m glad we’re both alive.”

It's Kueen Kim! Kardashian is treated to a dance display as she gets the royal welcome in Dubai
It's the type of scene which greats Britain's Kate Middleton wherever she goes.
But it was Kim Kardashian's turn to get the princess treatment as she received a royal welcome in Dubai on Sunday.
In scenes reminiscent of the Duchess of Cambridge on tour, the reality star had a flower crown and garland placed around her neck after touring a music facility for children.
Kueen Kim did her best Kate impression as she sat coyly and enjoyed a music performance from children who appeared to be wearing shirts with her face upon them.
That's where the similarities to the royals ended however, with Kim's outfit not something in which one could imagine the wife of Prince William.
In place of Kate's midlength skirts and matching shoes, Kim wore a ripped pair of jeans into which she tucked an oversized vintage print T-shirt.
'I wish R.I.P. meant Return If Possible': Celine Dion unveils powerful new a cappella song in tribute to late husband Rene one year after his death
It's been exactly one year since her husband Rene Angelil's death.
And Celine Dion is clearly still in mourning, as she unveiled a powerful musical tribute to him on his anniversary.
The 48-year-old posted a new music video to her Facebook page on Saturday, sung completely a cappella, without a single instrument heard or needed
The simple yet moving video sees the Canadian singer tracing her hand along rows upon rows of family photographs in a candle littered bedroom.
When the camera pans out, a forlorn Celine sits on the bed surrounded by more photographs, one of them clutched to her chest.
My heart keeps calling you,' she captioned the unnamed video in her native French. 'Even more often today, after a year… I know you hear me. And I can hear you too. You’re my life. Forever, Celine xx…'
She then continued in English: 'My memory loves you, it asks about you all the time. Especially today… One year later, I wish R.I.P. meant Return If Possible. Forever yours, Céline xx…'
The date is extra difficult for Dion, as Rene would have turned 75 in just two days time.
The father of six - who shared three children with Celine - was also the singer's manager since she was 12.
They were together since 1987 and married in 1994; he remained her manager right up until 2014, until he stepped down due to his battle with throat cancer.
Earlier on Saturday, her team shared another emotional photo tribute on her Facebook page.
'Today, January 14th, it’s been a year since René left us. He will always be in our hearts,' they wrote.
