Arsenal won the FA Cup for a record 13th time

Arsenal won the FA Cup for a record 13th time in a thrilling final by beating 10-man Chelsea, who were denied a league and cup double.
The result means Arsene Wenger is the most successful manager in the competition's history with seven victories.
The Gunners had controversially taken the lead in the fifth minute through Alexis Sanchez, but the linesman had his flag up for Aaron Ramsey, who was stood in an offside position. Ramsey did not touch the ball, allowing Sanchez to run through and slot in.
Arsenal dominated the first half and could have doubled their advantage but Danny Welbeck struck the woodwork with a header and Ramsey chested the ball against the same post on the follow-up.
Victor Moses forced David Ospina into a fine save in the second period, before the Chelsea wing-back was given a second yellow card on 68 minutes for diving in the penalty area.
With 14 minutes remaining, the Blues got back into the game through Diego Costa's shot that bobbled in, but Ramsey headed in the winner just two minutes later. The Welshman had also scored the winning goal in the 2014 cup final against Hull.
Arsenal could have had another late on, but Mesut Ozil struck the post from inside the area.
Wenger had major selection issues with Laurent Koscielny suspended and both Shkodran Mustafi and Gabriel injured, so centre-back Per Mertesacker was given his first start of the season. The German defender put in a dominant display to keep Costa quiet.
Chelsea failed to gain revenge for the 2002 final, which Arsenal won 2-0, and the result ends their run of four consecutive final victories.

’52 dead’ in militia clashes in Libya capital

Forces loyal to Libya's unity government said Saturday that 52 of its fighters were killed as they repelled rival militias in fierce clashes in the capital Tripoli.
Apart from sporadic gunfire in southern Tripoli, calm returned to the city on Saturday, the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Among the 52 killed in Friday's clashes which centred on the southern district of Abu Slim, said Hashem Bichr, a security official of the Government of National Accord, were 17 members of pro-GNA forces who had been "executed".
There was no immediate confirmation from medical or other independent sources of the death toll, updated from Friday's health ministry figures of 28 dead and more than 100 wounded that did not give a breakdown of the casualties.
UN special envoy Martin Kobler condemned the fighting in which heavy artillery and tanks were used, urging restraint from all sides.
Forces of the UN-backed GNA announced on their Facebook page they had defeated rival militias and taken control of a prison holding key leaders of the ousted regime of Moamer Kadhafi including his last premier, Baghdadi al-Mahmudi, and former intelligence chief Abdullah Senussi.
Al-Hadhba jail had been under the control of the Fajr Libya militia coalition, which had seized Tripoli in 2014 and set up a government headed by Khalifa Ghweil.
The Libyan capital has been gripped by a power struggle ever since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime dictator Kadhafi in 2011.
The latest fighting started around a complex of luxury villas that until March served as headquarters of militias loyal to Ghweil, who was ousted when the GNA took office last year but refuses to recognise the new administration.
Loyalist forces seized the villas in four days of intense fighting in March that saw them expand their control over the capital.
Tripoli had been relatively calm since, but dozens of armed groups still operate and several parts of Tripoli remain beyond its control.
Relying on militia support and pitted against a rival administration in eastern Libya, the GNA has struggled to assert its authority across the country.
In a statement on Friday, the GNA blamed Ghweil and Salah Badi, another leader of Fajr Libya, for Friday's violence.
"This is their gift to the people for the month of Ramadan," it said in a statement.
Mattia Toaldo, senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said the main figure to benefit from the Tripoli clashes was military strongman Khalifa Haftar, who supports the eastern administration.
"The man standing to gain from these clashes is again Khalifa Haftar who benefits from the increasing sense of chaos in the capital," he told AFP.

Trump trip leaves US and allies lost in translation

Donald Trump's first trip overseas was supposed to be about building bridges and clarifying his administration's intentions to friends and foes alike.
But the US president heads for home Sunday with some of Washington's allies as bewildered as ever by the billionaire tycoon's abrasive, unpredictable style and the substance of his policy plans.
Trip stops in Saudi Arabia and Israel and the Palestinian territories secured broadly favourable coverage with Trump seen by some commentators as having finally hit a presidential note.
He then emerged from his Vatican meeting with Pope Francis in buoyant spirits, declaring himself inspired to work harder than ever in pursuit of peace around the world.
But the mood started to sour when the 70-year-old hit Brussels on Thursday.
There, he bluntly accused 23 out of 28 NATO countries of taking advantage of US taxpayers by failing to pay their way in the Atlantic alliance.
In talks with EU leaders, Trump appeared to display a limited grasp of how the world's biggest market operates a common trade policy, railing against Germany's "bad, very bad" surplus with his country.

NASA to reveal new details on groundbreaking mission to 'touch the Sun'

NASA is set to announce new details on its radical mission to fly directly into the sun’s atmosphere.
The plan, dubbed Solar Probe Plus, will see a spacecraft launched from Earth in the summer of 2018, to reach an orbit within four million miles of the sun’s blazing-hot surface.
Scientists involved in the program will hold an announcement at 11 a.m. on Wednesday May 31, revealing new insight on the mission that could one day answer questions on the mechanisms behind stars and major space weather events.
Earlier this year, NASA first revealed they'd be sending a robot to the sun to help understand dangerous solar activity which could threaten humanity's existence.
The spacecraft will swoop within 4 million miles of the sun's surface next year- facing extremes in heat and radiation.
This will bring it seven times closer to the sun's surface than any spacecraft before it.
According to NASA, observations from this new vantage point will help to uncover the physics of how stars work, and could improve our ability to predict space weather.
These events have impacts on Earth, and the satellites and astronauts in space.
The announcement event will be held at the University of Chicago’s William Eckhardt Research Center Auditorium, and will be livestreamed on NASA TV.
Scientists have long wanted to send a probe through the sun's outer atmosphere, or corona, to better understand the solar wind and the material it carries into our solar system.
'This is going to be our first mission to fly to the sun,' said Eric Christian, a NASA research scientist at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
'We can't get to the very surface of the sun,' but the mission will get close enough to answer three important questions, he said.
To survive its mission, the spacecraft will need to withstand temperatures outside the spacecraft of 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit (1,377 degrees Celsius).
It will be made of a 4.5 inch-thick (11.43 cm) carbon-composite shield.

Researchers discover new glass frog so translucent you can see its heart beating

Scientists have discovered a remarkable new species of glass frog whose beating heart can be seen right through its chest.
The creature, found in the Amazonian lowlands of Ecuador, has green spots across its back and a ‘red heart fully visible’ underneath, thanks to the transparent membrane around its organs.
While it isn’t the only see-through species in existence, scientists say its markings, unusual call, and reproductive behaviour set it apart from the rest – but, they warn it may be in danger, as oil extraction and other human activities threaten its habitat.
Scientists have placed the newly discovered frog in the genus Hyalinobatrachium, which are known to share some of its extraordinary traits.
‘All species in this genus have a completely transparent ventral peritoneum, which means that organs are fully visible in ventral view,’ researchers explain in a new paper, published to ZooKeys.
‘The reproductive behaviour is also unusual, with males calling from the underside of leaves and providing parental care to egg clutches.’
But, the new species, H. yaku, stands out with its dark green spots and atypical reproductive behaviours.
‘I work with frogs every day and this is one of the most beautiful species I have ever seen,’ Juan Guayasamin, of the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, in Ecuador, told New Scientist.
And, while other frogs in the genus Hyalinobatrachium may have transparent features, not all have a bright red heart like that observed in the new species.

Lack of sleep causes your brain to EAT ITSELF to clean up worn-out cells, study reveals

Your brain starts to eat itself if it hasn't had enough sleep, according to a new study.
Researchers studied lab mice, and found that 'clean-up' cells were more active in their brains when they were sleep-deprived.
The cells, known as astrocytes, act like mini Hoovers in the brain, sweeping up cells as the brain's connections become weak and break apart.
'We show for the first time that portions of synapses are literally eaten by astrocytes because of sleep loss,' lead author Michele Bellesi told New Scientist
According to the research team at Italy's Marche Polytechnic University, the seemingly alarming process is actually a positive thing.
'They [our synpases] are like old pieces of furniture,' Bellesi said. 'And so [they] probably need more attention and cleaning.'
But he added that sleep-deprived brains showed ominous signs of activity that leads to Alzheimer's.
In sleep-deprived mice, brain cells called microglials were more active.
'We already know that sustained microglial activation has been observed in Alzheimer's and other forms of neurodegeneration,' Michele said.
The news comes on the heels of research that showed having too little sleep could put people at risk from heart disease.
The study found that having less than six hours sleep a night was associated with a higher risk of death in people with metabolic syndrome – a combination of diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity

Ariana Grande vows to RETURN to Manchester for a fundraising concert and tells fans 'we won't let hate win' after 'evil' suicide attack on her gig left 22 people dead

Ariana Grande has confirmed she will return to Manchester after posting on Twitter 'We won't let hate win'.
The singer's gig was attacked by suicide bomber Salman Abedi on Monday, killing 22 people and injuring 119 more.
She postponed her world tour and went home to Florida in tears following the atrocity but has now confirmed she will go back to the city for a benefit concert to support the families of the victims.
The 23-year-old wrote: 'My heart, prayers and deepest condolences are with the victims of the Manchester Attack and their loved ones.
'There is nothing I or anyone can do to take away the pain you are feeling or to make this better.
'However, I extend my hand and heart and everything I possibly can give to you and yours, should you want or need my help in any way.
'The only thing we can do now is choose how we let this affect us and how we live our lives from here on out.'
She added: 'I have been thinking of my fans, and of you all, non stop over the past week.
'The way you have handled all of this has been more inspiring and made me more proud than you'll ever know.
'The compassion, kindness, love, strength and oneness that you've shown one another this past week is the exact opposite of the heinous intentions it must take to pull off something as evil as what happened Monday.
'You are the opposite.

Iraq forces launch broad attack on IS holdouts in Mosul

Iraqi forces have launched a broad assault on parts of battleground second city Mosul still held by the Islamic State group, the military announced on Saturday.
The offensive is the latest push in the more than seven-month battle to retake Mosul, a linchpin in IS's now crumbling bid to establish a cross-border jihadist "state".
Multiple security forces units are attacking "what remains of the unliberated areas" on the west bank of the River Tigris, the Joint Operations Command said in a statement.
"Army forces attacked Al-Shifaa neighbourhood and the Republican Hospital, federal police forces Al-Zinjili neighbourhood, and Counter-Terrorism forces attacked Al-Saha al-Oula neighbourhood," it said.
All three neighbourhoods are located north of the Old City, a warren of closely spaced buildings and narrow streets that has posed significant challenges to Iraqi forces seeking to oust IS.
On Friday, the federal police said they had bombarded IS positions with Grad rockets and field artillery in "preparation for attacking the Old City in the coming hours."
But the Joint Operations Command did not mention any attack on IS-held areas of the Old City on Saturday.
Earlier this week, the military said it had dropped "hundreds of thousands of leaflets" on IS-held areas of Mosul urging "citizens to exit via safe corridors towards security forces."
- Dangers to civilians -
International aid group Save the Children expressed concern that the call for civilians to leave could expose them to additional danger.
"The Iraqi government must ensure all exit corridors are genuinely safe for people to flee," it said.
"The call for civilians to leave their homes is a U-turn on former directives that compelled civilians to stay and wait for the battle to pass" -- instructions that also raised concerns about the risks.
IS overran large areas north and west of Baghdad in 2014, but Iraqi forces backed by US-led air strikes have since regained much of the territory they lost to the jihadists.
Iraqi forces launched a major operation to retake Mosul in October last year, fighting their way to the city and retaking its eastern side before setting their sights on its smaller but more densely populated west.
The battle has taken a heavy toll on civilians, pushing hundreds of thousands to flee, while hundreds more have been killed or wounded.
On Thursday, the United States announced the results of an investigation into a deadly coalition air strike earlier this year.
The probe found that at least 105 civilians had been killed and 36 remained unaccounted for, but said most had been killed by the secondary explosion of IS munitions stored in a nearby house.
There have also been reports that members of an Iraqi interior ministry special forces unit tortured and killed detainees during the Mosul operation.
Iraqi photographer Ali Arkady recounted witnessing the abuse, which he also filmed, in an article for German magazine Der Spiegel. US network ABC News too reported on Arkady's footage.
The interior ministry has launched an investigation into the allegations.
Abuses such as those described in the reports could sow the seeds of future conflict even as security forces near the end of the battle for Mosul, IS's most emblematic stronghold.

How Kudirat Abiola was Murdered – Oyinlola

Former Military Administrator of Lagos State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has retold the incidents that led to the killing of Kudirat Abiola, wife of late MKO Abiola.

Oyinlola was the Military Administrator of Lagos State when the incident happened.

His said, according to Daily Post, “I was opening the reconstructed Sura Market on Lagos Island – that was on June 4, 1996, when I got a call from the current Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu – he was a Commissioner of Police somewhere in the country then.

“He called me and said, “Excellency, have you heard that Kudirat Abiola has been shot?” I quickly rounded off the market event and headed for Ikeja. I called Ogundimu, the Commissioner for Health and he confirmed it.

“He said he was there at the hospital battling to see if they could save her life. It was Ogundimu who later gave me the news of her death. Then mischief makers took over.

“The next thing they said was that she was coming from my office in Ikeja and that after she left, I sent assassins after her. But I thank God, when eventually the person who shot her, Sergeant Rogers, was arrested and in the course of the trial, he told the story of how he did it, Oyinlola’s name did not feature once.

“Providence also made President Olusegun Obasanjo to institute the Oputa Panel and at the panel, nobody mentioned my name. You can imagine that kind of thing. I, who had never slapped my wife, so how would I have instigated people to take guns and pursue a woman? Those were the kinds of intrigues I faced in Lagos. It was something else”.

On how he handled security challenges at the time, Oyinlola said, “Security of lives and property became a serious problem. My administration came up with the idea of floating an effective, well-kitted, mobile security outfit code-named Operation Sweep. That was in 1995. Operation Sweep was a joint task force of all the armed forces and the police.

“It was an entirely new crime fighting idea. The operatives were out on patrol 24 hours. I was also out on patrol every night. With that, criminals were effectively swept out of Lagos as it became a danger zone for them to operate.

“A measure of the outfit’s effectiveness and success led virtually other states in the country to follow our footsteps by setting up similar outfits. My successor, Col. Buba Marwa, sustained the outfit and passed it on to Bola Tinubu in 1999. I am happy that although the name may have changed today in Lagos and in other states, the concept is still alive.”

3 Nigerian Fraudsters Jailed 235 Years by US Govt

Three Nigerian fraudsters have been jailed a combined 235 years by the United States government.

30 year-old Oladimeji Seun Ayelotan, was sentenced to 95 years in prison; Rasaq Aderoju Raheem, aged 31, got 115 years and Femi Alexander Mewase, who is 45 years old was handed a 25-year jail term, according to a report from Infosecurity Magazine.

A court in the Southern District of Mississippi had in February found them all guilty of crimes including mail fraud, wire fraud, identity theft, credit card fraud and theft of government property. Ayelotan and Raheem were also found guilty of conspiracies to commit bank fraud and money laundering.

The Department of Justice say the trio since 2001 have been involved in multiple internet fraud schemes, resulting in losses in the tens of millions.

It claimed that they would befriend women on dating sites, establish a romantic relationship and then either get them to send money or have them participate in fraud schemes, usually without the victim’s knowledge.

The unsuspecting women would sometimes be required to cash counterfeit checks and money orders; use stolen credit card details to purchase goods; and use stolen personal information to take over victims’ bank accounts.

They were also apparently used to launder money via Western Union and MoneyGram, and re-package and re-ship goods obtained fraudulently.

A whopping 21 defendants have already been charged in this ongoing case, 12 of whom have pleaded guilty to charges involving conspiracy and 11 of whom have been sentenced.

The three Nigerians were among the six extradited from South Africa by US Department of Justice in 2015 to face charges of running a series of scams against gullible Americans over the past 16 years.

Removal of Chaplain: Ambode relocates 50th thanksgiving service to State House

Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, yesterday, directed that tomorrow’s thanksgiving service for the state’s 50th anniversary and second year anniversary of his administration be moved from the Chapel of Christ the Light to the Banquet Hall of Lagos House, Alausa. The directive may not be unconnected to the outrage trailing the removal of the Presiding Chaplain of Chapel of Christ the Light, Venerable Femi Taiwo, who was allegedly sacked and evicted from his official apartment.

The sack was linked to a development during an anointing service earlier in the month held in the church where the wife of the governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode stormed out following a situation attributed to the Chaplain.

A statement by the state Ministry of Information and Strategy said: “A Special Thanksgiving Service, earlier scheduled for Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, will now be held at the Banquet Hall, Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja on Sunday, May 28, 2017.” However, the actual reason for the relocation of the service was not stated in the statement. The state government said the event was “to cap the series of activities for Lagos at 50 celebrations, as well as glorify the Almighty God for the second year anniversary of Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration in Lagos State.” It said the theme of the event, which is scheduled to commence at 10 am is: “Pressing on to Greater Heights,” adding that Pastor Mathew Ashimolowo would be the guest speaker. Meanwhile, the state government said it has concluded plans to end the Lagos@50 celebrations with a spectacular display of fireworks. According to a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde said fireworks would be on display at midnight on Sunday at Eko Atlantic City. The statement reads:”This is to inform the public that there will be a display of fireworks as part of the music and fashion show to round off the 50th Anniversary Celebrations of the state. The fireworks will be on display at exactly 12 midnight at the Eko Atlantic City during the Golden Concert. Residents do not need to panic or nurse any fear whatsoever when they hear the sound of the fireworks as it is only just a symbolic way to draw the curtains of what has been a very splendid and successful celebration of our state.”

FA Cup Final : We’ll stop Arsenal - Moses

Victor Moses  says  Chelsea’s 3-0 loss to Arsenal eight months ago remains fresh in the minds of the players, but is confident Antonio Conte’s winning 3-4-3 formula will see the Blues win the  FA Cup today at Wembley The Gunners inflicted a heavy defeat on the Blues side at the Emirates Stadium last September when first-half  goals from Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil  stunned the eventual Premier League champions

Such was Arsenal’s dominance in the first 45 minutes of the Premier League game that Conte reacted by switching to a 3-4-3 set-up for the second half as Blues shut out the Gunners.

The defeat rounded off  a disappointing month for Chelsea following the 2-2 draw away to Swansea and the 2-1 loss at home to Liverpool earlier in September. But it would prove the key moment in the season  as Conte kept faith with the 3-4-3 formation for the trip to Hull the following week as Chelsea embarked on a 13-game winning streak in the league. Indeed, Conte admitted recently the heavy loss to Arsenal was the turning point for Chelsea in their title-winning campaign, which Moses has now admitted the players still think about. When asked about the defeat at the Emirates Stadium, Moses said: “We still think about it. We lost two games in a row against Liverpool and Arsenal. We felt very sad after that game but we played them at Stamford Bridge and won 3-1. “We beat them once and they beat us once. They’re going to want revenge but we’ll stick to our tactics and try and make sure we win. “We want to stick our formation [way of football]. They beat us at the Emirates but we switched to 3-4-3 which is the manager’s favourite formation, and it’s worked for us this season. “Teams are finding it very hard to break us down. We’ve just got to concentrate on ourselves and make sure we win on Saturday because Arsenal are going to do their best to try and beat us.” He added: “If we beat them it’s going to be a double for us, so we want to do it. We’re looking forward to it. Hopefully, we can. “We’ve got the league title and they’re going to want to win because they missed out on top four. We’re going to try and stop them because we want the Double.”
