Governor Fayose's Defense Of Corruption By Tayo Adeleke

Ordinarily, a criminal suspect like Mr. Ayo Fayose, the governor of Ekiti state should be ignored by decent people. I actually began to doubt the mental sanity of the governor when he said that the Chibok girls were never abducted and that their parents were pretending. Since then I have learnt to pity and pray for the governor while sympathising with Ekiti people who have the misfortune of being ruled by such a lousy character.
But because he has been left by President to continue to fool himself, the likes of Pastor Addboye are being recruited to sing the praises of the very corrupt governor.

Mr. Fayose has just condemned the anti corruption fight of the federal government. As far as the governor is concerned, President Buhari is not fighting corruption but his political foes. But  Mr. Fayose has failed to point  to any corrupt person arrested by the anti graft agencies under the present administration without any evidence of corruption and fraud. Even though Governor Fayose is presently enjoying constitutional immunity his agents who were arrested have  admitted that they collected N2.5 billion from ex-minister of state in the ministry of defense, Musiliu Obanikoro.

The former minister who initially ran to the United States of America has returned to Nigeria. In his comprehensive statement to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Obanikoro confessed that he collected the sum of  N2.5 billion for Mr. Fayose from the office of the National Security Adviser under retired Colonel Sambo Dasuki. That was part of the $2.1 billion set aside by the federal government to buy military weapons to fight Boko Haram and other terrorists.  Instead of denying the serious allegation of corruption Mr. Fayose has been parading himself as an 'opposition leader.' This fellow must think that Nigerians are fools to be hoodwinked by a vagabond in power like himself, apology to the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

A permanent secretary has just been arrested with 47 SUVs and 100 motorcycles bought from the sum of N27 billion stolen from the retirement entitlements of dead PHCN workers.  Others have confessed that they stole money budgeted for building hospitals, roads and schools for our children. And Fayose wants Nigerians to overlook such wicked crooks and heartless criminals. Does the governor know how many people have lost their lives in our abandoned hospitals and on our dangerous roads? What of the millions of our children that are out of schools? Just because  the limes of Fayose stole the billions of Naira for equipping hospitals, fixing roads and building schools.

Was it not under People's Democratic Party's Presidents that all former governors including Mr. Fayose were charged to court for stealing billions of Naira. In his own case Mr. Fayose was charged to court in 2006 under President Olusegun Obasanjo for stealing N1.2 billion through a poultry scam. Was he not also charged to court by the police for the killing of Dr. Ayo Daramola, Tunde Omojola and others in Ekiti state during his first term as a governor? Has Mr. Fayose forgotten that Mr.  Lere Olayinka, his current Media aide called the police to arrest and prosecute Mr. Fayose for assassinating innocent people in Ekiti state?

Since the memory of the  highly corrupt governor is very short we wish to remind him that the over 20 former governors who are standing trial in many courts were charged to court by the previous regimes. Even under President Jonathan,  former governors like Silva, Ladoja, Daniel and others were charged to court. Was it not under President Jonathan that former governor of Delta state, Chief James Ibori escaped from Nigeria only to be arrested in Dubai and deported to London for trial? Was it not President Jonathan that pardoned his former boss, Chief DSP Alamieyesigha who was jailed by the Obasanjo government?

In all the cases I have mentioned were we not told by the likes of Fayose that the big time crooks were charged to court  for political reasons even though none of them tried to defend the billions of Naira stolen by them? Let Mr. Fayose continue to deceive himself. Unlike when he ran away after his impeachment in 2006 we Ekiti youths will not allow him and his fellow corrupt elements to escape this time around. All those who have stolen public fund must be tried and jailed with orders to return out stolen wealth. Now Enough is enough.

Ferguson has one condition to sing at Trump's inauguration

Former X Factor runner-up Rebecca Ferguson says she has been asked to perform at Donald Trump's inauguration ceremony.

The star said she would "graciously accept" the invitation to take part in the 20 January event in Washington DC if she can sing Strange Fruit.

Strange Fruit is a song that protests against racism, particularly the lynching of African-Americans in the early 20th century.

It was recorded by Billie Holiday in 1939 but had previously been written as a poem
by teacher Abel Meeropol.

The track has "huge historical importance" and used to be "blacklisted in the United States for being too controversial", according to Ferguson.

In a Twitter post, she said the song "speaks to all the disregarded and down trodden black people in the US" and is "a reminder of how love is the only thing that will conquer all the hatred in this world".

The 2010 X Factor runner-up released an album covering Billie Holiday songs in 2015, although Strange Fruit does not feature as one of the tracks.

It is not known who will perform at the President-elect's swearing-in ceremony in the US capital later this month.

But reports in America suggest a number of high-profile musicians have turned down invitations, including Celine Dion and opera star Andrea Bocelli.

Kylie Jenner Gets ‘Revenge’ in Sneakers by Kanye West Muse Ian Connor

Kanye West’s former muse Ian Connor has shared his vision of Kylie Jenner in a new sneaker brand — his own.

The stylist revealed the photo today on his Instagram page, highlighting a pair of the “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” reality star in black Revenge x Storm sneakers. He announced the label in September last year.

“Kylie’s Revenge,” he captioned the photo, which shows Jenner wearing a sheer white top and bra, and light blue track pants. The website that’s listed for the brand revengexstorm.com is currently “suspended” and does not direct to more information about the shoes.

Meanwhile, on Kylie’s Instagram account, she posted a similar photo from a different angle.

Many of Connor’s followers noted in the comments section of the photo that the kicks resembled Vans sneakers. Some observers shared similar remarks when he posted video of the shoes on Instagram in December last year. “For The Non-Believers,” he wrote, showcasing the signature lightening bolt design on the shoe.

In 2015 Connor claimed he was hired as Jenner’s stylist, and along with landing the gig he also scored another job as a model in Kanye West’s fashion week presentation.

Buhari Removes SGF Babachir As Presidential Boards Committee Chair

President Muhammadu Buhari has removed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir David Lawal as chairman of the presidential committee on the reconstitution of federal government boards of parastatals, agencies and commissions.

Dailytrust quoted top sources as saying that the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo appointed to chair the presidential committee.

The chairman of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agencies (NDLEA) Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah was also appointed to head the secretariat of the committee at the instance of the vice president, a source told Dailytrust.

“The SGF is no longer in charge of that responsibility, for obvious reasons,” one of the sources said.

The Abdallah-led team now meets frequently at Wuse II, Abuja, it was learned. Another source said the committee “is working vigorously and will soon conclude its work after which it will submit its report to Mr President.”

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has recently queried the SGF over alleged fraud at the Presidential Initiative on North East (PINE).

Report: Dems target eight Trump nominees in bid to delay process, get picks to disclose more info

Senate Democrats reportedly plan to attack eight of Republican President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet picks and stretch their confirmation process from days to perhaps months, despite having essentially no chance of blocking their nominations.

The Democratic senators are vowing to make good on their vow unless the nominees start disclosing personal financial information, according to The Washington Post.

Trump has made eight of 17 Cabinet picks, with four remaining.

The primary targets include Rex Tillerson for secretary of state; Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions for attorney general; South Carolina Rep. Mick Mulvaney for the Office of Management and Budget; Betsy DeVos as the new education secretary and Steve Mnuchin, the former Goldman Sachs executive nominated to be treasury secretary.

“President-elect Trump is attempting to fill his rigged Cabinet with nominees that … have made billions off the industries they’d been tasked with regulating,” incoming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Sunday. “If Republicans think they can quickly jam through a whole slate of nominees without a fair hearing process, they’re sorely mistaken.”

Republicans who control the Senate and House plan to begin the confirmation hearings on Trump’s Jan. 20 Inauguration Day.

Republicans have a 52-to-48 majority over Democrats in the Senate.

The nominees will get enough votes in the GOP-run Senate committees but would run into delays when both parties cast final votes on the chamber floor, despite needing only 51 “yeahs.”

Democrats could use procedural moves to extend the debate on each of the nominees. But they don’t have the power to use the filibuster to block the nominations, because in the last Congress they changed the threshold on such filibusters from 60 to 51 votes.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and fellow Republicans don’t like the Democrats’ plan and argue they didn’t oppose outgoing Democratic President Obama’s nominations when he took office in 2008.

“Republicans and Democrats worked together and expeditiously to carefully consider his nominees,” McConnell spokesman David Popp told Fox News on Monday.

Popp points out that the Senate held hearings on multiple nominees before Obama was even sworn in, confirmed seven of them on Day One and that nearly all of them were confirmed within two weeks.

“Sen. Schumer and others approved wholeheartedly of this approach at the time,” Popp continued. “So surely they won’t object to treating the incoming president’s nominees with the same courtesy and seriousness.”

The others on the purported list of eight are Georgia GOP Rep. Tom Price, Trump’s nominee to run the Department of Health and Human Services; Andrew Puzder for labor secretary; and Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt to run the EPA.

Those not on the purported list are Marine Gen. James N. Mattis for defense secretary; South Carolina GOP Gov. Nikki Haley as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations; and former Marine Gen. John Kelly run the Department of Homeland Security.

Presidency begins payment of N5,000 monthly stipend to poor Nigerians in 9 States

*N-Power beneficiaries now receiving N30,000 monthly stipends also

*FG already implementing four Social Investment Programmes across the country including Micro-Credit Scheme for about 1.2m

As part of its determined efforts to touch the lives of Nigerians positively, the Buhari administration has now started the payment of N5, 000 monthly stipends to the poorest and the most vulnerable in the country through the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) of its Social Investment Programmes, SIP. This was contained on the information released by Senior Special Assistant on Media & Publicity Laolu Akande

Under the CCT, one million Nigerians would receive N5000 monthly payments as a form of social safety net for the poorest and most vulnerable as budgeted for in the 2016 Budget. In the first batch that commenced last week, nine states would be covered, and many of the beneficiaries have already reported receiving their first payments by Friday last week, December 30, 2016.

Funds for the commencement of the payments in four states were released last week to the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) – the platform that hosts and validates payments for all government’s social intervention programs. Funds for another set of five states to complete the first batch of nine states would follow soon.

Though the sequence for the payment of the money would be operationally managed by NIBSS, beneficiaries in Borno, Kwara and Bauchi States have started receiving the money. The other states in the first batch to commence the CCT payments are Cross Rivers, Niger, Kogi, Oyo, Ogun & Ekiti States.

The nine pilot states were chosen because they have an existing Social Register that successfully identified the most vulnerable and poorest Nigerians through a tried and tested community-based targeting (CBT) method working with the World Bank. However, other states have already begun developing their Social Registers and would be included in subsequent phases of the CCT implementation.

Beneficiaries of the Conditional Cash Transfer of the Federal Government would be mined from the Social Register, initially developed by 8 States through a direct engagement with the World Bank. Those states are featured in the first batch, with the added inclusion of Borno States where a validated list of IDPS was compiled in addition to the Social Register which is expected to go round the country.

Working with the World Bank, the CBT process has now been adopted for developing the Social Register in the other States around the country, for transparency, objectivity, and credibility in the selection of the poorest and most vulnerable beneficiaries for the program.

The Federal Government will actually commence community mobilization for the creation of the Register in more States soon, to expand the scope and reach of the CCT across the country.

Meanwhile, Plateau, Jigawa, Adamawa, Anambra, Benue, Enugu, Katsina & Taraba  States have so far complied with the stipulated framework provided, and are set for the community based targeting method for the development of their Social Register within their jurisdictions.

These States are to be followed by Delta, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Imo and Ogun States. Once the community mobilization, identification, and selection processes are completed, the information garnered from the poorest households would be entered onto the Social Register in the states and the National Register at NIBSS, after which the cash transfers would be disbursed to the beneficiaries.

All the funds approved for the Federal Government’s Social Investment Programmes, SIP, are domiciled with the Ministry of Budget and National Planning. In addition, the payment information and processes for all beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s SIP are hosted at NIBSS, as the Consolidated Beneficiary Register, to ensure and fortify efforts at authentication and verification, as well as for effective and efficient program management.

With the commencement of the CCT, the Buhari administration is now implementing four of the Federal Government’s SIP.

Besides the CCT, the N-Power Volunteer Corps designed to hire half a million unemployed graduates which have now engaged 200,000, and the National Homegrown School Feeding  Programme now running in three states, the Buhari administration has also kicked-off the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme, (GEEP).

Under GEEP, soft loans ranging from N10,000 to 100,000 have been designed for artisans, traders, market women among others.

Already, thousands of cooperatives, market women associations, farmers and enterprising youths, have been identified and registered for the purpose, on an ongoing basis, and the disbursement of the soft loans through the Bank of Industry have started since Nov 25, 2016.

At the last count, for the first phase, beneficiaries have been drawn from the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi, Delta, Imo, Kwara, Kano, Katsina, Lagos, Osun, Oyo, Ogun and Kogi States.

However, disbursements were halted and deferred until after the festive season. Vetting and approval of beneficiaries are now being continued through the month, with the expectation and plan that by month-end disbursements would have been made to 33,000 beneficiaries.

Regarding the 200,000 beneficiaries of the N-Power program, close to 50% of the graduates, have now been physically verified, and started receiving their monthly stipends of N30,000 last week. The second batch of 300,000 unemployed graduates is expected to be selected early this year to make up the half a million target set by the Buhari administration.

The verified graduates are now being deployed to work as assistant teachers in schools, as community health aides and as agricultural extension workers, in more than 20 States of the Federation. These States include; Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi, Anambra, Benue, Cross Rivers, Borno, Gombe, Edo, Jigawa, Katsina, Plateau, Kogi, Osun, Rivers, Zamfara, Niger, Sokoto, Ogun, and Taraba.

The government has also started the implementation of the National Home-grown School Feeding program designed to feed 5.5 million school children for 200 school days in the first phase of the program. Although the initial design was to feed pupils in 18 States, funding challenges had affected an earlier take-off. But the program has now commenced in Osun, Kaduna and Anambra States. More states are expected to join this new year.

In the new year, it is the plan of the Federal Government to scale up the implementation of the SIP to touch the lives of millions of Nigerians in fulfillment of its promises and in furtherance of its Change agenda.

The Hunter May Soon Become The Hunted By Dr. Wumi Akintide

The hunter may soon become the hunted if Donald Trump continues to uproot Barack Obama's legacies and accomplishments with impunity.
Tomorrow is not guaranteed to any of us. Only God knows what may happen to any of us the very next minute. In a way, human beings are like the squirrel that leaves its safe and secure nest on the tree to go cross the street to fetch some nuts for lunch

I have seen one such squirrel get run over by a car, no questions asked. I see its innocent but luckier companion come out from under a parked vehicle to stay for a few minutes with the mangled and lifeless body of its dead companion only to quickly disappear back to their nest with its companion gone forever.
In a way, we human beings are like those squirrels. We are here one minute and gone the next. Hence people say no condition is permanent. Donald Trump believes he has the whole world in his palm with his election as President and that the man he is going to succeed is gone forever into the dustbin of history. He sees himself as the today and tomorrow of America who can turn daylight into utter darkness with the stroke of his pen. I call him the proverbial hunter who may soon become the hunted, as he, like the Greek titan Atlas, carries the whole burden of the world on his shoulders. It is an awesome responsibility that Trump is yet to fully appreciate based on his verbiage and body language some 20 days to his inauguration as President of the United States.
Trump is demonstrating a lot of euphoria. He is already seeking to claim for himself the greatest of Obama’s accomplishments and achievements as President while giving the false impression to the whole world that he and not Obama is the one who has actually turned round the American economy. Many of his supporters would believe that to be the case, just like he bad-mouthed far more superior candidates like Jeb Bush and John Kasich in the Republican primary season to snatch the nomination.
Very soon, Donald Trump is going to claim he killed Osama Bin Laden and that he gave to America the best affordable health care reform law that no fewer than 10 American Presidents have tried to pass but failed to do in more than 50 years. The truth is that Trump and his supporters hardly ever want to give any credit to Obama and the Democrats for any good they have done in 8 years of building a sustainable coalition with the rest of the world to ensure peace in the world and to relieve America of having to carry the whole burden of the world by claiming to be the only police man of the world.
Thank God that Trump is not God who knows the beginning from the end and is able to use the foolish things of the world to confound the wise. Yes, Trump, with some help from Russian President Vladimir Putin and an inside job from FBI Director James Comey, has been able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in an election he actually lost by 3 million votes.
The guy is actually happy he has won a Jackpot and he wants to go the next extra mile to humiliate his predecessor, wipe out all of his legacies with the stroke of the pen within his first 100 days in the White House.
It is a lofty and grandiose ambition and plan to contemplate on the short run, but I dare say it is a scheme and agenda that could come back to haunt him big time, and predictably destroy his presidency, because what goes around comes around.
Donald Trump is doing everything today to exonerate Vladimir Putin, James Comey and WikiLeaks about any role they might have played in his narrow victory at the Electoral College. He is opposed to any sanctions that Obama is correctly and wisely invoking on Russia. Donald Trump sees those sanctions as an attempt by Obama and the Democrats to cast some aspersion on his victory and to consequently delegitimize his election as the 45th President of the United States thru subterfuge. Mr. Trump is also seeking to incite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against Obama in his last days as President just to score a cheap point.
I can assure you that all of these plots are going to blow up in Donald Trump’s face within 6 months of his taking office, when he can no longer blame anybody but himself for anything happening under his watch as the plenipotentiary landlord of the White House.
The chickens are going to come home to roost as he tries to deliver on all of the false promises he has made or as he tries to walk away from many of them because they are simply untenable and impractical to say the least.
Trump is trying to convince his party and all Americans that he is going to be far tougher on the Russians and Vladimir Putin than Obama was. We are watching closely to see how that is going to play out and how former KGB agent and current Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose ultimate goal is to restore Russia to its old glory as the Soviet Union, is going to respond to the appeasement tactics of Donald Trump.
Trump has already told Russians he is going to use his superior negotiation skills and rope-a-dope charisma to subdue the Russians, the Chinese, the Japanese and countries like Britain, France and Germany who now know what to expect from a President Trump and his demolition derby of a team in the fullness of time
Donald Trump will soon learn and realize that “Khaki no be leather” and that "making America great again" may be good for sloganeering but making it work in reality is a different ball game. His claim to jump start the American economy is totally misplaced because that is what Obama has already done with great success. His decision to also make America the Lord of the Manor to dominate other countries may be good for public consumption of his praise singers but a big security risk for America.
Such countries would be more than willing to gang up against America and to pool together their resources and share expertise and intelligence, if they realize thru the abrasive personality and braggadocio of Donald Trump that their collective security is in jeopardy. Donald Trump is behaving like the Tortoise in Yoruba mythology who gathered and locked up all the wisdom in the world in a calabash he alone had access to. But the tortoise soon realized in the end that he fooled nobody but himself, as nobody has a monopoly on wisdom. Pulling together and sharing intelligence and expertise as partners and never a cat-and -mouse relationship is the way to go for America to maintain her leadership position in the world.
If any of us thinks that the arms race is deadly serious right now, we all must wait till we see a President Trump. It is going to be a totally different ball game. There is no substitute to building an international consensus between Israel and Palestine like Obama and past American Presidents since Dwight "Ike" Eisenhower have done without exception.
What Donald Trump is promising is a total break from the past and it is not going to work. The whole foolishness is going to unravel and melt like an Ice Cream in the Summer time in 4 short years if Donald Trump maintains his present stance and arrogant disposition to the ideas of his wiser predecessors across the board. It is easier to win the presidency through deception. It is going to be much harder to keep it going thru deception and subterfuge like Donald Trump is suggesting.
His current inclination to gang up with Netanyahu against Obama can only serve him well up to a point because Netanyahu and he share the same abrasive personality, and they are going to, sooner rather than later, knock heads and fall apart. Just like KGB Putin is going to come after Trump if Trump deviates from Putin’s expectation of him, most Americans, even the Republican Party, are not going to stand for that.
For the avoidance of doubt, America can never be a fair-minded peacemaker and intermediary between the Palestinians and the Israelis if America is seen to be so biased against the Palestinians. Hamas and Palestinians should be told in no unmistakable terms that their threat to wipe out the State of Israel from the surface of the Earth is a threat they can never sustain or successfully carry out. They are throwing stones with their bare hands and catapult at an adversary carrying an AK-47 rifle and heavy armored tanks. They are throwing stones at a tiny nation with an arsenal of nuclear weapons at her disposal.
The Palestinians and Hamas are simply insane. Not to realize that Israel is the United States in the Middle East; an attack on Israel is an attack on America. There is no way in the world the Palestinians and Hamas can ever achieve their goal against the Israelis. The best they can do is lose some and win some and that is exactly the Israelis would need to do just Menachem Begin and Anwar Sadat did when they both signed the Camp David Accord with President Jimmy Carter as the sponsor and presiding officer.
Faced with that reality on the ground, it is foolhardiness for them to still insist they are not going to recognize the existence of the State of Israel. Israel too must not overstretch her luck by refusing to stop the building of more Israeli settlements in Gaza and the West Bank while America is trying to prevail on the Palestinians and Hamas to face reality and to stop fooling themselves. That to me is the crux of the matter.
The two- state solution is the ultimate answer to the Arab-Israeli conflict. I don’t care if Trump is King Solomon, the wisest man in the Bible, if he does not accept that reality, he too is fooling himself.
I totally support the Obama approach because Obama like all previous American Presidents before him appreciate that fact.
Both Israel and Palestine must give peace a chance because war is an ill wind that blows no good to either side. Both sides can surely get along and save the whole world of the negative effects of their endless conflict. That was exactly what President Jimmy Carter did when he negotiated the most enduring peace treaty in that region in the great Camp David Accord which has saved so many lives and too much bloodshed.
The Covenant relationship between God and the Jews that is so much talked about in the Holy Scriptures is a fact that nobody can wish away. The real Promise Land and Canaan to me is America without any question. That is why the Jews prosper and thrive so much in America. They have become King Makers and they always play a dominant but silent role in the power configuration of American politics and military power.
Let the Palestinians not continue to fool themselves that they can ever defeat Israel. Obama not only armed Israel with sufficient cash to defend herself, he has also bent over backwards to secure Israel by offering Israel the dome and by voluntarily sharing intelligence with the greatest security agency the world has ever known. I am talking of Mossad, which can take out anyone it wants to target. Palestinians have to be reminded of that and to know that they would fight Israel for eternity and still come off short or empty-handed after all is said and done.
I have greatest respect for the Jews as a people. They are among the most resourceful and cohesive in the whole world. I am a proud product of the Yeshiva Jewish University of New York, my alma mater. I know the Jews like a book and I would be the last person to ever second-guess or underrate the Jews. Among my greatest heroes include the great Ben Gurion, Golda Meir, Menachem Begin, Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, Ehud Barak and the young fighter pilot, Elan, who led the Israeli raid to destroy the Syrian Nuclear Reactor at a very desolate area of Syria that Syrian President Assad kept as a top secret for more 7 years that not even America was able to detect for that long.
I love the Jews and the world needs the State of Israel and her survival as a nation living in peace and understanding with their Palestinian neighbors who have suffered so much deprivation from the disputed territory since 1948 following the Treaty of Berlin led by America which created the State of Israel to put them back in their Biblical Home land in the Middle East. America is never going to desert Israel but Israeli leaders like Netanyahu and his supporters must not overplay their hands and start crying wolf against the first black President who has proved himself to be a great friend of Israel and never a weakling to be pushed around by Netanyahu.
Let me conclude by saying compliments of the Season and a Happy New Year to all u of you as I pull the curtains to end the year 2016.

CNN Shows Fallout Computer Terminal In A Video About Russian Hacking

In a video from December 30, 2016, CNN used footage from Fallout’s hacking mini-game as B-roll to illustrate reports of recent, real-life hacks committed by the Russian government.

The similarity appears to have been first spotted by one Poofylicious on Reddit, who put together the following explainer:

The footage in question occurs right around a minute into the video while the presenter discusses President-elect Trump’s reaction to Moscow’s alleged involvement in what the White House has called “Significant Malicious Cyber-Enabled Activities.” Because if anything indicates the severity of cyberwar and the importance of international norms against digital espionage, it’s a command prompt from one of Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic role-playing games.

In that part of the video is immediately proceeded by a soundbite from Trump in which soon-to-be President of the United States said, “I think we ought to get on with our lives. I think the computers have complicated lives very greatly. The whole age of computer has made it where nobody knows exactly what’s going on.” Indeed!

GIF
Of course, reporting the news is never an easy thing, especially in the age of “fake news” where any old piece of content can begin reshaping our perception of reality if it gets enough shares and retweets, regardless of its veracity. And CNN certainly isn’t the first news agency to incorporate video games into their coverage of global affairs. Several years back, a report by the BBC used the UNSC symbol from Halo while talking about the United Nations. Child soldiers from the Metal Gear games have been used in news stories about actual child soldiers.

Broadcast news seems to especially struggle with what to show in the background when discussing things like computer algorithms and hacking. But that’s understandble to a degree. Computers are complex pieces of technology, so much so that they even sometimes seem like magic. Like Trump said, thanks to the age of the computer, nobody knows exactly what’s going on.

Still, user BFeely1 wasn’t surprised, “It’s quite standard practice for the news media to demonize text-mode screens. My parents watch the news so religiously that they sometime consider my use of standard command prompts to be suspicious. This has even resulted in real legal trouble for some people.”
